You’re pregnant, you’ve been saving newborn photos on Pinterest for weeks, and now you want to know what this actually costs before you fill out a single inquiry form. Most Austin photographers hide their prices behind a “contact for details” button, which makes it impossible to tell if you’re looking at a $400 session or a $2,000 one. The actual numbers, mine included, are below.
> Quick answer: Newborn photography cost in Austin typically runs $490 to $550 for a full posed studio session with props, outfits and edited digital images included. At My Unique Picture in Cedar Park, the Sweet Newborn Session is $490 for up to 2 hours and 13 images, and the Unique Newborn Session is $550 for up to 2.5 hours and 15 images. Bundling maternity and newborn together costs $600 to $750 and saves money over booking the two separately.
How much does a newborn photographer cost in Austin?
A posed studio newborn session in the Austin area generally lands between $400 and $900, and most of that range comes down to how long you get, how many finished photos you take home, and whether the photographer supplies the props and outfits or you bring your own.
At My Unique Picture, there are two standalone newborn collections, both at our Cedar Park studio:
- Sweet Newborn Session, $490. Up to 2 hours. Baby with parents, or baby with one sibling. 13 digital images in color and black and white. Unlimited use of my prop and outfit collection.
- Unique Newborn Session, $550. Up to 2.5 hours. Baby with parents plus one sibling. Wrapped poses, unwrapped poses and family poses. 15 digital images in color and black and white. Unlimited props and outfits. Finished photos back in 1 to 2 weeks.
Both include a private, password-protected online gallery with a download link. Extra images beyond what your package covers are $10 each, so if you fall in love with 20 photos instead of 15, you know exactly what that costs before you choose. Every package also comes with a 20% print discount.
The $60 difference between the two is real time and real family shots. If you have a toddler who will want to be in the pictures alongside both parents, the Unique session is the one built for that.
Is it cheaper to book maternity and newborn together?
Booking maternity and newborn as a bundle costs less than buying the two sessions separately, and it’s the option most of my expecting clients choose. The math is simple: a standalone Unique Studio Maternity session is $350 and a standalone Unique Newborn Session is $550, which comes to $900. The bundle that covers both is $750.
| Collection | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Sweet Maternity + Newborn Bundle | $600 | 30-minute studio maternity (mom and dad), 2-hour newborn with parents, 24 images total (12 + 12), 1 gown |
| Unique Maternity + Newborn Bundle | $750 | 1-hour maternity + family session (studio or outdoor), up to 2.5-hour newborn + family session, 30 images total (15 + 15), 2 gowns, full newborn prop collection |
| Unique Newborn Session alone | $550 | 2.5-hour newborn session, 15 images, unlimited props |
| Sweet Newborn Session alone | $490 | 2-hour newborn session, 13 images, unlimited props |
The other reason to bundle is timing. Maternity photos look best at 29 to 35 weeks, and newborn sessions happen at 5 to 14 days old, so you are booking both inside about a ten-week stretch anyway. Deciding once is easier than deciding twice with a newborn in the house. If you want to see how those two dates fit around your due date, I walked through it in the real timeline for booking newborn photography in Austin.
What is included in the price of a newborn session?
The price of a newborn session at My Unique Picture covers the studio time, everything your baby wears or lies in, the editing, and the gallery you download from. You arrive with your baby, a diaper bag and a pacifier. That’s it.
Here is what that includes in practice. The props are not a small basket of wraps. I have a large collection of vintage bowls, crates, handmade headbands, tiebacks, bonnets and outfits, and on the Unique Newborn Session you can use as many of them as the session allows. Everything is steam sanitized before you arrive, and I ask everyone to wear the shoe covers I provide in the studio.
The room is heated for the baby’s comfort, so dress in layers because it gets warm. There’s a private room for feeding and changing, white noise running during the session, and water and snacks out for you. You’re welcome to bring your own food too.
Editing is included at the basic level: skin retouching for newborn acne, color correction, and both a color and black and white version of each image on the larger packages. Heavier work like color changes, head swaps or tattoo removal costs extra. I don’t provide RAW or original files, and I don’t hand over unedited images.
Two things worth knowing about the gallery before you book. You get your color-corrected gallery in about 14 business days, pick your favorites, then get the finished edited gallery about 14 business days after that. And I guarantee holding your images for 90 days. Older files are usually still on my backups and can be retrieved for a storage fee, but don’t plan around that.
What drives the cost of newborn photography up or down?
Four things move the price of a newborn session more than anything else: the length of the session, the number of edited images, who else is in the photos, and whether the photographer provides the styling.
Session length
Newborn sessions are long because babies set the pace. A session usually takes 2 to 3 hours once you build in feeding, changing and settling. Mine run up to 2 or 2.5 hours depending on your collection, and I don’t rush. A 45-minute newborn session is cheaper for a reason: it’s a session that can’t pause when your baby wakes up hungry.
Number of images
Most of the price difference between packages in Austin is image count. The jump from 13 images to 15 is part of what separates my $490 and $550 collections. If you want more than your package includes, additional images are $10 each at My Unique Picture, which is worth asking about anywhere you book. Some studios charge $40 to $75 per extra image, and that’s where a $500 session quietly becomes a $1,200 one.
Who’s in the photos
Parents are included in both of my newborn collections. The Sweet Newborn Session covers parents *or* one sibling; the Unique Newborn Session covers parents *and* one sibling. Beyond that, extra family members can be added for a fee that varies by package. If grandparents are flying in for the birth and you want them in a frame, say so when you inquire so I can quote it properly.
Props, outfits and wardrobe
Props and outfits are the line item parents forget to budget for. If a photographer doesn’t supply them, you’re buying wraps, bonnets and a knit romper yourself, and a styled newborn setup adds up fast. Both of my newborn collections include props and outfits. On the maternity side, gowns come from my in-house wardrobe, so you don’t have to find something that fits at 33 weeks. You can see the full gown collection before your session and pick what you like.
Why do some Austin newborn photographers cost $1,500?
Photographers charging $1,200 and up in Austin are usually selling prints, albums and wall art on top of the session, not just digital files. There’s nothing wrong with that model, but you need to know which one you’re buying before you book.
The two common structures look like this:
- All-inclusive digital pricing. One price covers the session and a set number of edited digital images. You know your total up front. My collections work this way: $490 or $550, with $10 extras if you want more.
- Session fee plus products. You pay a lower fee to book, maybe $200 to $400, then choose prints, canvases or an album afterward. Totals often land between $1,000 and $2,500. The sales conversation happens after you’ve already seen your baby’s photos, which is a hard moment to be practical.
Neither one is a trick. Just ask one question when you’re comparing quotes: “What is the total I will pay to walk away with digital images I can print myself?” If a studio can’t answer that in one number, you’re looking at the second model. My collections include a print release and a 20% print discount, so you can print your own or order through me.
If you want to compare my full newborn and maternity pricing side by side, it’s all published on the maternity and newborn collections page, and the full pricing guide for family and children sessions is at /investment/.
Common mistakes that cost Austin parents money
The expensive mistakes with newborn photography are almost never about the package price. They’re about timing and about what you didn’t ask.
- Waiting until after the baby arrives to book. Newborn sessions happen in a nine-day window, 5 to 14 days old, ideally 5 to 10. Good studios fill that calendar months out. Book during pregnancy, then email or call me within 24 to 48 hours of delivery so I can place you on the right day. That cushion is also what lets me reschedule if your baby comes early or late.
- Comparing session prices without comparing image counts. A $400 session with 5 images and $60 per extra costs more than a $550 session with 15 included. Put both quotes in terms of total images delivered.
- Not asking what happens if baby needs more time. If the photographer books sessions back to back in 60-minute slots, your session ends whether your baby cooperated or not. Ask how much time is actually held for you.
- Assuming you need to buy outfits and props. Ask what’s included before you spend $150 on wraps and headbands you’ll use once.
- Forgetting the delivery timeline when you need photos for announcements. Color-corrected gallery in about 14 business days, finished images about 14 business days after you choose favorites. If you want cards out before the holidays, work backward from that.
One more that isn’t about money: don’t pick on price alone when the subject is a five-day-old. I’m trained in newborn safety, licensed and insured, and I only do poses I’m confident doing. I wrote more about what newborn safety actually looks like in a studio if that’s the part you’re weighing.
FAQ
How much does newborn photography cost in Austin, TX?
Newborn photography in Austin, TX generally costs $490 to $550 for a posed studio session that includes props, outfits and a set number of edited digital images. Studios that sell prints and albums separately often reach $1,000 to $2,500 in total. My Unique Picture publishes all newborn collection prices, so you can see the full number before you inquire.
Is a maternity and newborn bundle worth the extra money?
A maternity and newborn bundle is worth it if you were planning both sessions anyway. The Unique Maternity + Newborn Bundle is $750 and covers two sessions and 30 images, compared with $900 for the same two sessions booked on their own. If you only want newborn photos, the standalone $490 or $550 collection is the better fit.
How many photos do you get from a newborn session?
A newborn session at My Unique Picture delivers 13 to 15 hand-edited digital images depending on your collection, in both color and black and white. Additional images are $10 each if you want more than your package covers. Images arrive through a private, password-protected online gallery with a download link.
Can I still book if my baby is already here?
You can still book a newborn session after your baby has arrived, and I photograph babies of any age. Past 14 days, babies are less sleepy and don’t curl up as easily, so I plan more swaddled setups and more awake shots instead of the deeply curled poses you see in my newborn portfolio. Contact me and I’ll tell you what availability I have.
Do newborn session prices include editing?
Newborn session prices at My Unique Picture include color correction and basic skin retouching, which covers the newborn acne nearly every baby has around day 10. Heavier retouching such as color changes or head swaps costs extra. RAW and original unedited files are not provided.
If you’re putting together your budget now, the most useful next step is telling me your due date so I can tell you which collection fits your family and what dates are open in that first two-week window. Say Hello and I’ll get back to you within 24 hours with pricing and availability.
