October 14, 2026 — family photography

You’ve probably been waiting all summer to do these photos outside, because nobody wants to stand in a field in a gown in 97 degrees. The heat finally let go the first week of October. If your bump is in its best window right now, you have a short, comfortable stretch of weather to work with, and a few decisions to make quickly.

> Quick answer: The best stretch of the year for outdoor maternity photos Austin moms can actually enjoy is fall, and early-to-mid October is the sweet spot. A cold front moved through Central Texas on October 1 and 2 and pulled highs from the low 90s down into the low 80s, with mornings in the upper 60s. Start the session within an hour or two of sunset (about 7:13 p.m. in the first week of October, 6:55 p.m. by October 20) or shortly after sunrise, plan on up to an hour outside, and pick a date you can move indoors if it rains.

Why fall is the best time of year for maternity photos in Texas

Fall wins in Texas for one reason that has nothing to do with scenery: it’s the first season since spring when you can stand outside in a long gown for an hour without feeling sick. A Pacific cold front crossed Central Texas on Thursday October 1 into Friday October 2, dropped 1 to 4 inches of rain across the area (locally 6 to 8, with a flood watch), and then knocked Austin highs from the low 90s into the low 80s, the coolest air since the middle of July.

For context, a normal early-October high in Austin is 87. Mornings over that first weekend ran in the upper 60s to near 70. The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center expects temperatures to stay near normal through about October 10, which is why I tell moms who are already in their window not to sit on this one.

I won’t promise you a specific forecast for your date, because no honest photographer can. What I can tell you is that a low-80s afternoon with a breeze is a completely different session than a September one. You stop sweating through the gown, your face relaxes, and your toddler lasts longer than four minutes.

The best time of day for an outdoor session in Austin

Outdoor maternity sessions look best within an hour or two of sunset, or in the half hour or so after sunrise, when the light is low and warm and nobody is squinting. In Austin, sunset falls around 7:13 p.m. in the first week of October, 7:00 p.m. by October 15 and 6:55 p.m. by October 20. So an evening session early in the month starts somewhere between 5:15 and 6:15 p.m., and that start time creeps earlier every week.

Sunrise moves the other way, from about 7:25 a.m. to 7:36 a.m. across the month. A sunrise session means a 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. start, which sounds brutal at 32 weeks but is genuinely the coolest, quietest, emptiest time to be at a park.

My outdoor maternity sessions run up to an hour, so plan to give the evening about 90 minutes once you count parking and the walk in. Other Austin photographers schedule the same way, an hour or two before sunset, because the light does what it does regardless of who’s holding the camera.

Your 29 to 35 week window decides more than the season does

The weather is the easy part. The harder constraint is your pregnancy: maternity photos look their best between 29 and 35 weeks, when the bump is round and clearly there and you can still stand, walk and change clothes without it costing you the whole evening. If those weeks land in October for you, the calendar has already made your decision.

Do the arithmetic now. If you’re 31 weeks this week, your window closes in about a month, and several Austin-area maternity photographers list four to six week booking lead times on their own sites. That is the whole reason October dates disappear so fast. I walk through the full booking schedule in the pregnancy maternity photoshoot timeline and go deeper on seasonal tradeoffs in the best time to schedule a maternity photoshoot in Austin.

One more piece of timing most moms don’t think about: after your session, your color-corrected gallery comes in about 14 business days, and your final edited images about 14 business days after you pick favorites. If you want prints or an announcement in hand before the baby comes, shooting at 30 or 31 weeks gives you a lot more room than shooting at 35.

The gowns come from my studio wardrobe, so you don’t have to shop

Nothing stalls an October booking like the thought of finding a dress that fits a 32-week bump in two weeks. You don’t need to. My Unique Picture keeps a large in-house wardrobe of maternity gowns, and you can browse the whole thing on the available gowns page and tell me which ones you want pulled before you arrive. Gowns are included in my maternity sessions, and the Unique Outdoor Maternity collection includes up to two outfit changes.

For fall outdoor photos, solid colors and soft, flowing fabric hold up best against green Texas parks, which stay stubbornly green here well past when the rest of the country turns. If your partner and kids are joining, coordinate colors without matching exactly. Fall family photo outfit ideas covers that in more detail, including what to do with a toddler who refuses to wear anything but one specific shirt.

Outdoor or studio, and what happens if it rains

October is beautiful here and it’s also one of Austin’s wetter months. Current Results puts the October average at roughly 4 inches of rain across about 6 to 7 rainy days, and that first front alone dumped several inches, which means park ground stays soft and muddy for days after a storm. Picking an October outdoor date without a backup plan is the single most common way these sessions go sideways.

The backup is simple at my studio, because the indoor session uses the same gowns and the same photographer. The four maternity collections compare like this:

Collection Price Length Who’s included Images
Unique Outdoor Maternity $350 Up to 1 hour Location from my approved list 15 in color and B&W, up to 2 outfits
Mini Outdoor Maternity $250 Up to 30 min Mom and dad, location chosen by me 10 images
Unique Studio Maternity $350 Up to 1 hour Spouse and/or one sibling 15 in color and B&W, 2 gowns, two backgrounds
Mini Studio Maternity $250 Up to 30 min Mom only 10 images, 1 gown

Full details and the maternity plus newborn bundles are on the collections page. Extra family members can be added for a fee on most packages, so bring the toddler.

Outdoor locations come from my approved list in the Austin, Leander and Cedar Park area. I keep that list short on purpose: these are spots where I know the light at 6 p.m., where parking is close enough that you aren’t hiking at 33 weeks, and where the ground drains. On the Mini Outdoor session I choose the location, which is part of how I keep it to 30 minutes and $250.

Common mistakes with fall maternity sessions in Austin

The mistakes I see in October are almost always scheduling mistakes, not styling ones. A few worth avoiding:

  • Booking midday because it’s the only free slot. Overhead sun in an open Texas park is harsh at any temperature, and a noon session in October still runs low 80s.
  • Waiting for a “perfect” forecast before claiming a date. Dates inside the comfortable window go first, and a forecast ten days out tells you very little.
  • Choosing a famous park across town. A 40-minute drive in Austin evening traffic eats the golden light you booked for.
  • Letting the window close. At 36 or 37 weeks, standing and posing for an hour outdoors is a different experience, and plenty of babies don’t wait for the due date.
  • Shopping for a gown instead of asking. The wardrobe is already here, in multiple sizes, steamed and ready.

If you’re weighing outdoor against a fully climate-controlled session, studio or home for newborn photos in Austin covers how I think about the same tradeoff for the newborn session you’ll want to book at the same time.

FAQ

What’s the best month for outdoor maternity photos in Austin?

October is the most reliable month for outdoor maternity photos in Austin, with late March through April as the other good stretch. Austin summers are too hot for a comfortable gown session outdoors, and the first real cool-down usually doesn’t arrive until the opening days of October.

How long does an outdoor maternity session take?

An outdoor maternity session at My Unique Picture runs up to an hour, or up to 30 minutes for the Mini Outdoor collection. Block about 90 minutes total so parking, walking in and a wardrobe change don’t eat into the good light.

Can my husband and toddler be in the outdoor photos?

Partners and children are welcome at outdoor maternity sessions, and the Mini Outdoor collection includes mom and dad. Extra family members can be added to most collections for a fee, so tell me who’s coming when you book and I’ll plan the time around a small child’s attention span.

What happens if it rains on my maternity session date?

If rain or wet ground makes your outdoor date unusable, we move the session into my Cedar Park studio or reschedule it, using the same gowns either way. Because October averages about 4 inches of rain here, I’d rather set the backup plan at booking than scramble the night before.

I’m already 34 weeks. Is it too late for an outdoor fall session?

At 34 weeks you’re still inside the 29 to 35 week window, so an outdoor session is absolutely doable if we get a date on the calendar this week. Later than that, a studio session is usually the kinder choice, because you can sit, rest and change clothes in a controlled room.

If your 29 to 35 week stretch overlaps with this October, send me a note through the Say Hello form with your due date and the week you have in mind, and I’ll tell you what evenings are still open and which locations are shooting well right now. I reply within 24 hours.
