My Unique Picture

October 10, 2026 — family photography

You’re in your third trimester, you want outdoor maternity photos in the next few weeks, and you’ve probably already pinned a few shots at Zilker. Here’s the problem: a lot of Austin’s most-photographed spots are closed, crowded, or still muddy from this month’s rain. Let me save you a wasted session and walk you through what’s actually open, how an outdoor session works, and what to do if the forecast turns.

> Quick answer: For outdoor maternity photos in Austin this October, the open spots are on the north side: skip Zilker Botanical Garden (closed through Oct 16) and the Zilker Great Lawn (tied up by ACL festival and rain damage through Oct 18), and choose a north-side location instead. On pricing, My Unique Picture’s Unique Outdoor Maternity session is $350 for up to an hour, includes 15 images in color and black and white and up to 2 outfits, at a location you pick from our approved list across Austin, Leander, and Cedar Park.

Which Austin maternity spots are closed or crowded right now

Three of the places people most often picture for an Austin maternity session are off the table this month. If you were planning on any of them in the next two weeks, you’ll want a different spot.

Zilker Botanical Garden is the big one. Austin Parks and Recreation closed it October 1 through 16 for renovation and maintenance, and the main building may stay shut even after it reopens Thursday, Oct 16. There’s also been a management change: the Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy declined to renew its agreement, so the city resumed running the garden directly on Oct 1. So even once it reopens, the entrance and fee setup may look different than what older location guides describe.

The Zilker Great Lawn is also a no-go. ACL festival weekend two runs Oct 9 through 11, which closes Barton Springs Road and all Zilker parking, and neighborhood parking nearby is prohibited. On top of that, heavy rain before the festival turned big sections of the Great Lawn to thick mud. Austin Parks confirmed the lawn stays closed through at least Oct 18 for remediation like aeration, soil work, and possible resodding.

Creek-side spots need a beat too. Austin-Travis County activated its emergency operations center on Oct 1 ahead of a rain event forecast at 2 to 8 inches, and officials told people to stay away from creeks and trails. The rain passes, but the effect lingers: greenbelt and creek trails stay slick and muddy for days, which is a real consideration when you’re 32 weeks along and watching your footing.

Where to take maternity photos in Austin instead this October

Your best bet this month is a north-side location away from the ACL corridor, on ground that drains well. The whole south-central area around Zilker is slow and congested through mid-to-late October, so moving your session north solves the crowd problem and the mud problem at once.

Brushy Creek Lake Park in Cedar Park is a solid example. It’s a 90-acre public park with trails and lake views, it sits well away from the festival traffic, and it doesn’t charge a photography permit fee. That last part matters more than you’d think, which brings me to the thing most location guides leave out.

The permit and fee part nobody mentions

Some Austin venues charge their own photo fee and require you to book ahead, separate from what you pay your photographer. Zilker Metropolitan Park and Zilker Botanical Garden both require a $50 photography session permit for posed or portrait photography, and the city’s reservation system asks you to book 4 to 30 days in advance. The garden’s own FAQ confirms the $50 fee applies to any photo shoot, professional or not, and covers the photographer plus one assistant.

None of the popular location roundups flag this, so people show up and get surprised. This is exactly why my studio works from an approved list instead of pointing you at a random park. The approved spots are ones I know are open, photograph well, and don’t bury you in paperwork or extra fees on top of your session price.

How the approved-location list works

The approved list is simply a set of outdoor spots across Austin, Leander, and Cedar Park that I’ve vetted and shoot at regularly. With the Unique Outdoor Maternity session, you pick the location from that list, so you get a say in the backdrop while I handle knowing which places are actually accessible, where the good light is, and which ones charge fees. You can see more of my outdoor work on the maternity photography page.

There’s also a shorter option. The Mini Outdoor Maternity session is $250 for 30 minutes with mom and dad, and for that one I choose the location. It’s a good fit if you want outdoor photos without a lot of planning and you’re comfortable letting me pick a spot I know works.

How much an outdoor maternity session costs and what you get

At My Unique Picture, the full-length option gives you more time and more images than most Austin mini sessions do for a similar price. Here’s the comparison so you can see which fits.

Session Price Time Images Outfits Who picks location
Unique Outdoor Maternity $350 Up to 1 hour 15, color and B&W Up to 2 You, from the approved list
Mini Outdoor Maternity $250 30 minutes 10 Mom and dad included Studio chooses

For context, a lot of Austin studios run fall outdoor mini sessions around $495 for 25 minutes. The Unique Outdoor Maternity session gives you a full hour and 15 hand-edited images for less than that. Every package also includes a private download link, additional images at $10 each, and a 20% print discount. You can see the full breakdown on the maternity and newborn collections page.

When in pregnancy to book your outdoor session

The sweet spot for maternity photos is 29 to 35 weeks. Your bump is clearly round by then, and most moms still feel comfortable standing, walking, and changing poses for an hour outdoors.

If you’re reading this at 30-something weeks and the clock feels tight, you’re right on time rather than late. The practical move is to book the date now and lock the location, because October’s first cool, dry stretch is also when everyone else wants outdoor photos. For a fuller look at planning by week, I wrote out the whole maternity photoshoot timeline separately.

What happens if the weather turns

If the forecast goes bad the day of your outdoor session, the all-weather backup is a studio session at the same $350 price. The Unique Studio Maternity is up to an hour, includes 15 images in color and black and white, your spouse and/or one sibling, two background looks, and two gowns from my in-house wardrobe.

That last part solves the biggest outdoor headache: what to wear. You don’t have to go shopping for a maternity gown you’ll use once. My studio keeps a large collection you can browse ahead of time on the available gowns page, and two of them come with the session. Studio also means a climate-controlled room, easy outfit changes, and consistent light no matter what Austin’s sky is doing. Plenty of moms book studio on purpose for exactly those reasons.

Common mistakes to avoid this month

A few things trip people up when they book an outdoor Austin session in October.

Picking a location from an old blog post without checking whether it’s open, permitted, or festival-adjacent this week is a common one. Creek-side spots usually aren’t dry for a few days after rain, so avoid them if the forecast was wet recently. Waiting past 35 weeks hoping for a perfect-weather window often backfires, since you’ll feel too tired to enjoy an hour on your feet. And before you book an outdoor date, ask your photographer what the rain plan is so a wet forecast never costs you the session.

If you tell me your due date and the look you’re after, I’ll point you to the open spots that fit and set a studio backup so you’re covered either way. Say hello here and I’ll reply within 24 hours.

FAQ

Is Zilker Botanical Garden open for photos in October 2026?

Zilker Botanical Garden closed Oct 1 through 16 for renovation and reopens Thursday, Oct 16, though the main building may stay shut longer. The city also resumed direct management on Oct 1 after the conservancy declined to renew, so the entrance and fee structure may change under the new operator.

Do I need a permit for maternity photos at Austin parks?

Some Austin venues require their own photography permit. Zilker Metropolitan Park and Zilker Botanical Garden both charge a $50 photography session fee and ask you to book 4 to 30 days ahead. Working from a studio’s approved list avoids most of that, since those spots are chosen partly because they don’t pile on fees.

What’s the best week in pregnancy for maternity photos?

The ideal window for maternity photos is 29 to 35 weeks. Your bump is well defined by then and most moms still move comfortably enough for a one-hour session.

How many photos do I get with an outdoor maternity session?

The Unique Outdoor Maternity session includes 15 hand-edited digital images in both color and black and white, delivered through a private password-protected online gallery. The Mini Outdoor Maternity includes 10 images.

What if it rains on my outdoor session day?

You can move to a studio maternity session at the same $350 price, which includes two gowns from the in-house wardrobe and consistent lighting regardless of the forecast. Booking outdoor with a studio backup in mind is the smart play for any October date in Austin.
