when do I need to book family photos to get holiday cards in time
You want your family on this year’s holiday card, and you want that card to land in mailboxes while people are still reading them. What nobody spells out is how far back from that date the photo session actually sits. It’s further than most parents guess, and the math is easier than it sounds.
> Quick answer: To get holiday cards in time, book family photos for the first half of October. My Unique Picture delivers a color-corrected gallery in about 14 business days, then the finished hand-edited images about 14 business days after you choose your favorites, which is roughly six calendar weeks total. An early-October session puts your edited photos in hand by mid-to-late November, in time to order cards and mail them the first week of December, well ahead of the USPS First-Class deadline of Thursday, Dec. 17, 2026.
The mailbox date is the only date you can’t move
USPS asks you to send First-Class Mail and Ground Advantage by Thursday, Dec. 17, 2026 for delivery before Christmas in the lower 48 states, with Priority Mail on Dec. 18 and Priority Mail Express on Dec. 19. That date is the emergency exit, not the plan. Greenvelope’s 2026 card guide puts ideal arrival between Dec. 1 and Dec. 15 and points out that the week of Dec. 15 is the busiest mailing week of the year, which is a bad week to be counting on the post office.
Paperless Post gives the same advice in plainer terms: mail printed cards the first week of December. So that’s the real target. Everything else in this post counts backwards from Dec. 1 to Dec. 5.
Printing eats more days than parents expect
Card printers need production time plus shipping time, and those are two separate waits. Shutterfly quotes 5-7 business days for standard shipping and 6-10 for economy, and 5-10 business days if you have them address and mail the cards for you. Its 2026 order-by dates for Christmas delivery run from Dec. 12 on economy through Dec. 19 on rush, which tells you what waiting costs: you pay for speed you could have had for free in November.
Back up 5-7 business days from a Dec. 1 mailing and you’re ordering cards around Nov. 19 at the latest. The card guides are more relaxed than that and suggest ordering two to three weeks before Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving falls on Nov. 26 in 2026, so the comfortable order window is roughly Nov. 5 to Nov. 12.
My delivery timeline, in days you can actually count
Here’s the number other photographers usually leave vague. You’ll get your color-corrected gallery in about 14 business days after the session. You then pick your favorites for artistic editing, and about 14 business days after you send me those picks, your edited gallery is ready to download. Both of those numbers are published on my FAQ page, and together they come to about 28 business days, or close to six calendar weeks.
Pay attention to where the second clock starts. It starts when you choose, not when the first gallery lands. If you open that gallery on a Tuesday and sit on it for two weeks because you can’t decide between the two where everyone is actually looking at the camera, you just moved your own card deadline two weeks later. The slowest step in this whole chain is often the one you control.
This is also worth asking any photographer you’re comparing. Turnaround in the fall varies a lot by studio. Caitlin Mae Photography, for example, notes that while her own delivery runs 1-2 weeks, other photographers take 4-6 weeks. Nobody can plan a card around “a few weeks.”
So when do I need to book family photos for holiday cards?
Put the session date and the card date side by side and the answer stops being a guess. The rows below assume you choose your favorites within a day or two of the first gallery arriving.
| Session date | Edited photos in hand | What that means for cards |
|---|---|---|
| Late September | Late October | Relaxed. Order in the Nov. 5-12 window, mail Dec. 1. |
| Oct. 1-15 | Mid to late November | Safe. Order as soon as the gallery lands, mail the first week of December. |
| Oct. 20-31 | Early December | Tight. You’ll likely pay for expedited printing and mail close to Dec. 17. |
| November | Late December or January | Send it as a New Year card instead. |
The first half of October is the honest sweet spot, and it’s also when Austin weather finally cooperates. Our first real cold front came through Oct. 1-2 this year and pulled highs out of the 90s. Fall booking fills up fast around here. Austin studios are already posting dated October and November mini sessions, with the last slots landing around Nov. 15, which is too late for a Christmas card no matter how quick the turnaround is. If you want outdoor family photos at one of our approved Austin, Cedar Park or Leander spots, or a studio session where the light never cancels on you, my family sessions cover both and I’ll help you pick between them when you inquire.
If it’s already late October, you have a real option
A November session makes a lovely card. It just makes a New Year card, mailed in early or mid January, and that’s a genuinely good choice rather than a consolation prize. Your card arrives in an empty mailbox instead of competing with forty others, people actually read it, and you get to use photos of your family as they are right now instead of rushing a session you’ll feel hurried in.
There’s one practical note for late-season outdoor sessions. Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, so the soft evening light that sat around 6:30 in October lands closer to 4:30 after the clocks change. That makes a weekday outdoor session hard if you’re both working, and it’s the main reason November bookings tend to move into the studio.
The mistakes that actually cost people their card
Four things go wrong, and none of them are the photographer’s turnaround. They’re all scheduling.
- Sitting on the proofing gallery. Choosing your favorites the week the gallery arrives is the single biggest thing you can do to protect your own deadline.
- Booking the session for a weekend in late October and assuming the photos arrive “in a couple of weeks.” Ask for the number in business days before you book.
- Forgetting the printer. Ordering cards on Nov. 25 does not mean having cards on Nov. 25.
- Waiting on addresses. Collect your mailing list in October, while you’re waiting on the gallery, instead of in December while you’re waiting on cards.
Milestone and cake smash photos work on cards too
If your baby already has a session on the calendar, you may not need a separate family shoot at all. A Watch Me Grow milestone session for a baby between 3 and 10 months includes 2-3 setups, and the Unique Studio Session puts a parent in the frame with the baby. A cake smash session gives you a themed backdrop from my list plus, in the Gold collection, a plain white background for family shots. Either one gives you a card photo, and the same October math applies. There’s more on why those stages are worth photographing in this post on capturing milestones.
Every one of my packages includes a private download link, so the digital images are yours to upload to Shutterfly, Minted, Artifact Uprising or wherever you like, and a 20% print discount if you’d rather order prints through the studio.
While you’re waiting on your session date, outfits are the thing worth thinking about. I’ve written up fall family photo outfit ideas and a longer guide to outfit ideas and color schemes that holds up on a card.
FAQ
How late can I book family photos and still get Christmas cards?
The last comfortable booking date is around Oct. 15, and the last workable one is roughly Oct. 31 if you choose your favorites immediately and pay for faster card printing. A session after Nov. 1 should be planned as a New Year card mailed in January.
Can I use the photos from the first gallery on my card?
The color-corrected gallery is there so you can choose your favorites, and the images you download are the finished hand-edited ones that come after you choose. Plan your card around the full timeline, not the first gallery.
Do I have to order prints through the studio to use my photo on a card?
You don’t have to order anything through the studio. Every package includes a private download link to your digital images, so you can upload them to any card printer you like, and the 20% print discount is there if you’d also like prints from me.
What does a family session cost at My Unique Picture?
Family session pricing isn’t listed on the site, so the fastest way to get it is the pricing guide, which I email over. Maternity, newborn, milestone and cake smash prices are published on their collections pages if you want to compare.
How long does the session itself take?
A family session runs about an hour, and you’ll want to allow extra time if you have a toddler who needs a warm-up period before anyone smiles at a stranger with a camera. The long part of the holiday card timeline is editing and printing, not the shoot.
If you want your family on a card that goes in the mail the first week of December, the move this week is to get a date on the October calendar. Say hello with your rough timing and whether you’re leaning studio or outdoor, and I’ll reply within 24 hours with what’s still open.
