Most studio pages show the pictures and skip the logistics. Here’s the whole path in order, the way it runs at my Cedar Park studio.

Newborn photography is the one session you have to plan before the subject exists. That sounds strange until you see how narrow the window is: the sleepy, curled-up look parents come in asking for lasts about ten days.
Reserve your date while you’re still pregnant
I hold newborn spots by due date rather than a fixed calendar day, so there’s room to move once your baby actually arrives. Most families book in the second trimester or early third, often at the same time they book maternity photos. If you’re reading this in your third trimester and haven’t booked, you’re not late, but you do have fewer weekends to choose from. Contact me within 24 to 48 hours of birth
A quick text or call after birth is all it takes, and that’s when the real date gets set. I count forward from your baby’s actual birthday to land inside the 5 to 14 day window. Births come early, late, and sometimes by a route nobody planned for, so this step exists precisely because due dates are estimates.
Session day at 5 to 14 days old
Your session is scheduled for a morning or early afternoon slot and runs up to 2.5 hours on the Unique Newborn Session, up to 2 hours on the Sweet Newborn Session. Nobody watches the clock. I build in time for feeding, diaper changes, and the twenty minutes where your baby decides she’s awake now.
Your photos come in two rounds
After the session I send a private, password-protected online gallery of color-corrected images, usually in about 14 business days. You pick your favorites, and the hand-edited finals follow. Newborn collections list finished photos in one to two weeks. Every package comes with a private download link and a 20% print discount, and extra images are $10 each if you can’t narrow it down.
Why 5 to 14 days matters more than anything else on the list
The 5 to 14 day window exists because of how newborns behave, not because photographers like rules. In that first stretch a baby still holds the tucked position from the womb, sleeps through being moved, and hasn’t hit the peak of baby acne or the second-week growth spurt that makes everyone hungrier and lighter-sleeping.
Days 5 through 10 are the sweet spot. After about two weeks, sessions shift: fewer curled poses, more swaddled and awake shots, more eye contact. Those photos are genuinely lovely, just a different feel, and I still photograph three-week-olds and six-week-olds regularly. What I won’t do is promise a newborn’s-first-week look at five weeks.
What happens during the session itself
A newborn session at my studio is slow on purpose, and most of it looks like a heated room, white noise, and a lot of waiting for your baby to settle. The room sits warmer than you’d keep your house, around the temperature a naked newborn is comfortable at. There’s a private room for feeding and changing whenever you need it.
The posing splits into three groups. Wrapped photos come first because babies settle fastest snug. Unwrapped photos follow, on beanbag setups with props, bonnets, headbands and wraps I supply from my own collection. Family photos come last, with parents and one sibling included depending on the collection. I only do poses I’m confident doing, and I’m trained in newborn safety, licensed and insured. What you bring is short:
- Extra diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes for you (things happen)
- Feeding supplies, whichever way you feed
- A pacifier if your baby takes one, even if you don’t normally use it
- Loose clothing for the drive over, nothing with tight waistbands or elastic that leaves marks on new skin
- Any sentimental item you want in a photo: a grandmother’s blanket, a name sign, the hospital hat
Gowns, wraps, bonnets, headbands, outfits, baskets and backdrops are all mine and all included. The Unique Newborn Session includes unlimited props and outfits, so there’s no counting.
Studio or your home: what the setting actually changes
Plenty of Austin photographers offer in-home lifestyle newborn sessions, and the choice comes down to what kind of photos you want rather than which one is better. My newborn sessions happen in the Cedar Park studio, and here’s the honest difference.

The trade is real: driving somewhere with a newborn is the thing parents dread most, and I’d rather say so than pretend it’s nothing. Getting to the studio from Round Rock, Leander, Georgetown and north Austin
The studio is at 202 Walton Way Ste. 192 in Cedar Park, which is a short drive for most of the northern suburbs. From Leander it’s usually about 10 to 15 minutes. Round Rock runs 15 to 20 minutes on 1431 or Parmer. North Austin and the Domain area is roughly 20 to 30 minutes depending on 183A traffic, and Georgetown is 25 to 35. Families come from Pflugerville, Hutto, Liberty Hill, Lakeway and Bee Cave too, and I also photograph in Houston.
Give yourself a buffer and plan to arrive a little early rather than rushed. Newborn photography in Austin TX means dealing with 183A and I-35, and a stressed drive tends to mean a stressed baby for the first half hour.
Common mistakes parents make booking newborn photos
Most newborn sessions that don’t go well were decided weeks before session day, and almost always for the same handful of reasons.
The biggest one is waiting until the baby is born to start looking. By then the good weekend slots inside your window are usually gone, and you’re choosing from whoever happens to be free rather than whoever you actually wanted. The second is locking in a hard calendar date instead of a due-date hold, which puts you in a bind the moment your baby comes two weeks early.
Then there are the small ones. Skipping the feed before you leave, which turns the first hour into a feeding session. Dressing your baby in something with elastic that leaves lines on his legs. Booking someone whose portfolio looks great but who doesn’t do newborns specifically, because posing a five-day-old safely is a separate skill from photographing a wedding. And assuming a newborn shoot means the baby alone, when parents and a sibling are included in most collections.
